The imperial topaz, also known as golden topaz because its name is associated with the brightness of the earth, which brings light to darkness, is among the most beautiful and valuable colored stones.
The term topaz means “to seek” and gives its name to an island in the Red Sea that is often shrouded in fog, making it difficult to locate. The meaning comes from the Greek topaz and the imperial designation for this type of topaz originates in Russia, the site of the first deposits, exhausted during the tsarist period.
Imperial topaz was discovered in Brazil around 1760, in Morro de Saramenha, in Ouro Preto. Foreign travelers already registered the exploration of the stone since the beginning of the XNUMXth century. The rare gem, of high economic value, has always been present in local history and it is believed that this unique variety has a hydrothermal origin, related to the last volcanic event that occurred in the region.
The extensive known area of occurrence of imperial topaz, unique in Brazil, in Ouro Preto, also cuts across the towns of Rodrigo Silva, Miguel Burnier, Dom Bosco, Boa Vista, Saramenha and Antônio Pereira.
The Brazilian and Minas Gerais gem, which formed a large specialized workforce in these municipalities, appears encrusted in soft clay rocks with kaolin veins. Its dismantling occurs with the use of a hydraulic cannon.
Mina do Capão, the largest of the complex of mineral deposits in the area, is the only one in activity in the world, being responsible for supplying the gem on a commercial scale, supplying jewelry stores all over the world.
Workers move around 160m³ of material per day in search of raw topaz. Every 2m³, in general, one carat of cutable topaz is obtained, whose price can vary between US$5 and US$2. Controlled production makes the gem even more coveted, because the less it is extracted, the fewer stones circulate in the market.
Its colors range from yellow to red, passing through intermediate nuances such as pink and lilac, the latter rarer. It can also be subjected to treatments that aim to improve its appearance and make its colors more attractive, with the consequent increase in its monetary value, such as heat treatment, filling of fractures with resin and surface diffusion.
