The characteristics of the emerald from Bahia

The emerald, belonging to the beryl group, is a green colored gem whose shades are found in light green, dark green and yellowish green, translucent or transparent. In its composition is aluminum, silicon, sulfur, zinc, iron, phosphorus and chromium, which is the true responsible for its coloring.

According to the renowned Germological Institute of America (GIA), for the gem to be recognized as an emerald and not simply a green beryl, it must have at least 0,1% chromium oxide (Cr2O3). In its raw state, it is found in the form of prismatic and hexagonal crystals with a vitreous luster. Its relative density is 2,70 and its hardness is between 7,5 and 8,0.

In Brazil, the emerald attracts prospectors from all over the village of Carnaíba, which belongs to the city of Pindobaçu and is approximately 370 kilometers from Salvador. In this place, it is possible to find the largest reserves in the country. There are about 70 mines where the shallowest are at 50 meters and can reach up to 300 meters in depth.

  1. I love the mineral samples and that's why I became interested in the site. But I would like to contribute: There is an error, because “In its composition is aluminum, silicon, sulfur, zinc, iron,…”; There is no Silicone... but Silicon, element of the periodic table...
