In the universe of jewelry, precious stones in general are much admired and whenever they appear in a piece, they easily become protagonists of that production. Brilliant and diamonds are the darlings of jewelry connoisseurs. Because they are classic and are almost universally pleasing, they find a prominent place in jewelry stores and also in the market.
However, a very common doubt, shared by many jewelry admirers, arises: what would then be the difference between brilliant and diamonds? That's what you'll find out in today's post. Let's go?
Differences between brilliant and diamond
The terms brilliant and diamond are used interchangeably in Brazil, however, it is not the most appropriate way of applying these terms, since every brilliant is a diamond, but not every diamond is brilliant. Got confused? Let's explain!
Simply put, diamond is the stone itself, while brilliant is the specific cut style given to that diamond. The round brilliant-cut diamond is the “complete” name given to brilliants that, for simplicity, are just called brilliants on a daily basis.
Brilliant is a specific type of diamond cut. This cut has 58 facets, in order to make the most of the optical qualities of the diamond, providing maximum brightness.
You have to know how to differentiate!
This cut was developed by Henry Morse and Marcel Tolkowsky and is, today, the most common cut in the world, precisely because it highlights what is most beautiful about the stone: its shine. Knowing the difference between diamonds and diamonds is precious information for consumers of these jewels.
It is common in the market to try to sell diamonds with an “eight eight” cut instead of diamonds. This is a common cut in smaller stones that have fewer facets and, consequently, the shine of this jewel will not be as intense as that of a brilliant.
The diamond's brilliance is enhanced by the brilliant cut, precisely because of its 58 non-parallel facets, in the shape of a diamond and radial convergence. Any change in one of these characteristics will influence the brightness of the stone.
the stoning
This type of cutting can also be used on other gemstones. In this way, it is possible to cut a brilliant tourmaline, topaz or garnet, for example, which does not make this stone a diamond. The only gem that can be called “brilliant” are round brilliant-cut diamonds.
Diamonds with other cuts, in steps, for example, regardless of size or shape, are not brilliant, as this is a parallel-faced design, without the diamond facets and radial convergence typically found in brilliants.
When gems other than diamonds are cut in the brilliant style, they are given another name, such as “round tourmaline cut in the brilliant style”. With the enormity of precious stones, including Brazilians, any stone with the cut that follows this design is a good choice for your jewelry.
A cut as beautiful as brilliant is capable of enhancing the shine, sophistication and elegance of any stone, be it a diamond or another precious stone. Bet on this stoning, whether in earrings, engagement rings, necklaces or bridal accessories. Without a doubt, the effect will be “brilliant”!
