Primitive peoples already used it as amulets against evil spirits. In antiquity, they were symbols of power. In the Renaissance, they covered the aristocracy with glitter. With the exception of a hiatus in the past three decades, getting prettified has always been a macho thing! The notion that “masculine” men don't wear jewelry has been swept away by the metrosexual era, whose biggest symbol of vanity is former England footballer David Beckham.

“We went back to the origins. There is no longer any shame in wanting to set yourself apart and stand out from the pack by wearing jewelry,” says Hécliton Santini, president of the Brazilian Institute of Gems and Precious Metals (IBGM).

Men's and luxury jewelry

The presence of male consumers buying jewelry for themselves is an increasingly strong trend, becoming the new – and coveted – slice of jewelry store consumers. Since 2007, the market has doubled in size, accounting for 20% of the world's jewelery sales. The fastest growing category is bracelets and necklaces, particularly gold chains.

Luxury stores are always aware of this new interest and have been adapting to the trend. According to a survey by the American consultancy Unity Marketing, the sale of jewelry to women grew by 6,5% between 2007 and 2009, while men were responsible for a 10% increase in that period.

The truth is that they are bolder and don't care so much about being discreet. Celebrities like Johnny Depp, Brad Pitt, Orlando Bloom, Pharrell Williams and Bruno Gagliasso have already joined the new trend.

What you see today on the streets is that the modern man has opened his mind more, starting to appreciate items previously considered only feminine. These accessories have gained a permanent place in the fashion of this improved male version of modern times. The “new men” in their varied styles have been looking more and more, just like us women, to give a touch of sophistication and refinement to the look and nothing better than beautiful men's jewelry!

For men, accessories are also part of their lifestyle. What they want is to stand out and highlight their personality traits and tastes through different accessories and pieces.

If you, dear reader, are not included in the group of the most daring, try to start with the simplest: start wearing watches and, if you are a fan of social clothes, tie clips and cufflinks. Once you're feeling comfortable, start introducing other accessories like gold chains and rings. And mix, can you? After all, what's so great about wearing a ring and also a necklace? Remember the old and effective adage: less is more. You can even mix, as long as you do it sparingly, as accessories should always balance the style composition.

Bia Kawasaki, fashion consultant, warns against using common sense so as not to exaggerate, not fall into the vulgar, the twin brother of tacky. Bet on accessories that do not usually leave room for error, such as those already mentioned rings, bracelet and necklaces.

For the rings, opt for the more robust and large models, mainly for the ring and middle finger. Emeralds, blue topaz and tourmalines are the most preferred gemstones, which may or may not be accompanied by diamonds. You thinner models, are usually used when you want to wear more than one ring on your fingers, or on the same hand. But don't worry about rules, and feel free to compose your personal style.

For the “walk of the carriage” the changes do not stop there. Ufa! It's about time!

Wait! The man will surprise and enrapture us!
