Gemstone dealers seek new opportunities in the market

Gemstone and diamond dealers showcased their sparkling products at the Hong Kong International Diamond, Gem & Pearl Show, which took place from March 1 to March 5, 2016.

Local company Vivid Gems showed a wide range of fine tanzanites, blue moonstones and spinel in various colors, among others. The company's president, Manoj Kala, believes that blue stones will be on the rise this year. “Last year, red stones were in very high demand — rubies and spinels were very popular. They will continue to sell well, but I believe the market will demand more blue stones in 2016. I am also expecting increased demand for small and medium stones, from 8 by 6mm to 12 by 10mm, as well as for calibrated products. The US market has been asking for a lot of calibrated tanzanite and blue moonstones,” he explained.

According to Vitória Fiuza, president of ArtOuro & Gemas, the expectation for this year is stability for the jewelry market, with smaller stones and especially with a bluish hue being the highlight. Marine water and blue tourmaline or indicolite, as it is also known, stand out!

In general, traders expect business to remain stable this year, even with major markets such as Hong Kong and China somewhat slowing down. Demand for larger stones may be sluggish in 2016. Small to medium stones, around 10 carats, are likely to sell best.

Diamond dealer Rinky Gems is looking for new markets and customers to tap into its diverse portfolio. Although it started as a specialist in small diamonds, in the last two or three years the company has also started to deal with stones from 30 points to 10 carats certified by the GIA (American Institute of Gemology), as well as colored gemstone jewelry, which today responds for 20 and 30% of the business, respectively, according to director Anikit Mehta. “Small diamonds are in good demand in the wholesale market, so we expect our flagship product to still sell well this year. However, we also anticipate strong demand for our larger, certified stones,” Mehta said.
