It is common, in the contemporary world, to celebrate Mother's Day every second Sunday in May. This date has already become synonymous with affection, affection and consideration for the mothers. Mother's Day is a date of singular importance for the Western world, especially for strengthening family ties. But how did the second Sunday in May come to be considered, worldwide, as Mother's Day?

Since ancient times, there have been reports of rituals and festivals around mythological maternal figures and phenomena such as fertility. In the Middle Ages, there were also many references to the figure of the Mother, especially the Judeo-Christian symbolism with the figures of Eve and Mary. But it was only at the beginning of the XNUMXth century that mothers began to have an official day to be honored. The choice of date (every second Sunday in May) refers to the story of the American Anna Jarvis.

Origin of Mother's Day

Anna Jarvis lost her mother, Ann Marie Reeves Jarvis, in May 1905, in the city of Grafton, in the state of West Virginia, United States. With the death of her mother, Anna, faced with the suffering and pain she felt, decided to organize a special day with the help of other girls to honor all mothers and to teach children the importance of being a mother.

Anna and her friends were connected with the Methodist Church in the town mentioned above. On May 10, 1908, Anna's group was able to hold a service honoring mothers at Andrews Methodist Church, Grafton. The reverberation of the cult's theme soon caught the attention of local leaders and the then governor of the state of West Virginia, William E. Glasscock. Glassock set the date of April 26, 1910 as the official day of commemoration in honor of mothers.

Soon, the repercussion of the official celebration at the state level spread to other regions of the United States and was also adopted by other governors. Finally, in 1914, then US President Woodrow Wilson proposed that National Mother's Day be celebrated every second Sunday in May. The important thing to mention is that Wilson's decision was taken based on the suggestion of Anna Jarvis herself, who became internationally known as the patron of Mother's Day.

Mother's Day in Brazil

In the case of Brazil, Mother's Day was celebrated for the first time on May 12, 1918, at the Young Men's Christian Association in Porto Alegre. In other places, there were also other celebrations of the same nature, generally associated with religious institutions. But it was only in 1932, during the provisional government of Getúlio Vargas, that Mother's Day began to be celebrated according to the model of the United States, that is, on every second Sunday of May.

Being a mother is not easy. You need to know how to take care of and manage a whole family, reconciling work with your household chores and your social life. It's facing difficulties with a jump on your feet and a smile on your face, knowing that in the end everything always works out. Being a mother is giving unconditional love without expecting anything in return, it is teaching the path that your children should walk without wanting to let go of their hands. Being a mother is care, affection and devotion.

And all these heroine mothers know how to do all this with the grace that only a woman who has been through motherhood can say how it is. It's fighting every day for your children's happiness with the certainty and calm of knowing that their future holds very promising surprises for them. And more than that: it's facing everyday battles without losing the elegance that only a woman mother knows how to have.

This is a tribute from ArtOuro to all mothers who should celebrate their day every day of the year. Happy Mothers Day!
