The characteristics of the imperial topaz of Minas Gerais

Black gold

The imperial topaz is a gold, golden yellow or light brown gem, and can also be found in orange, pink and cherry red tones, translucent to transparent. It is believed that topaz has hydrothermal origin, being related to the last volcanic event experienced on earth.

Currently, it is found on a commercial scale only in the city of Ouro Preto and neighboring municipalities (something around a perimeter of 150 square kilometers), located in the state of Minas Gerais. Discovered around 1760, of the many mines existing since this period, where it was possible to extract it, today only Capão do Lana is active.

The designation “imperial” is of Russian origin, where the first stones were found during the tsarist period, however, in this region the extraction was exhausted. Composed of aluminum containing fluorine, silica with iron, titanium, chromium and traces of zinc, this gem has a hardness of 8. Its rarity and beauty make this gemstone highly sought after by jewelers around the world.

The mysticism of stones: the imperial topaz

As a mystical stone, imperial topaz is believed to prevent heart disease by promoting blood circulation. They say it also has powers to harmonize and calm the nervous system, and is indicated for the relaxation of tensions, loss of sleep, loss of air, bronchitis, digestive system, among others. As for the psyche, it is said to prevent restless sleep and somnambulism; it also acts positively on bad mood and irritability.

In meditation, imperial topaz is seen as a bringer of light that assists in elevation to higher levels. It is a symbol of the signs of Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Leo, Scorpio and Sagittarius, and is ruled by the planets Mercury, Jupiter and the Sun.

Wooden wedding? No, after the officialization of a calendar developed by the Gemology Department of the IBGM (Brazilian Institute of Gems and Precious Metals), the five years of marriage are celebrated with Wedding of Imperial Topaz. Each year of marriage is now symbolically represented by a precious stone. And how about the opportunity to present your partner with a beautiful piece of jewelry that contains an imperial topaz?

This is also a gem that symbolizes the professions of actor, communicator, publicist, civil servant and salesman. Therefore, on some special occasion (or on a daily basis, as it is better to surprise!) I honor them with a beautiful ring or a wonderful pair of earrings that contain this stone.

It is said that the colors of imperial topaz resemble those of a sunset. What do you think? Did you like to know about this gem from Minas Gerais? Because to learn more about other precious stones and metals, follow our blog!
