The graduation ring appeared at West Point, a traditional military academy in the United States, in 1835. A group of students had the idea of marking their passage through the school, and also identifying which class they were part of. In this way, the ring was created to indicate a rite of passage. After this class, the school institutionalized the graduation ring, becoming a tradition.
In Brazil, the ring has become a traditional gift given by parents to graduates. It has a standard shape, with the graduate area emblem on one side and a stone in the center. The color of this stone symbolizes the profession. There is no single explanation for this relationship between stones and professions, but they are all related to the way the West reads the meaning of gemstones.
