Do you know what Golden September means? It is nothing more than a national campaign to raise society's awareness of the importance of early diagnosis of childhood cancer.

But why Golden September? Because many countries already use this month and this color to alert society about the fight against childhood cancer and also because our children and young people are worth gold.

Childhood cancer already represents the 1st cause of death (7% of the total) of children and adolescents in Brazil. According to data from the National Cancer Institute (INCA), in the country, annually, there are more than 10 new cases of cancer registered in the age group of 5 to 19 years. This data points to a public health problem that deserves attention from the population and health professionals.

Child and adolescent cancer is a rapidly evolving disease that is not preventable, and early diagnosis is a great ally in combating the disease. If diagnosed early, the chances of cure can reach 80% of cases.

Childhood cancer corresponds to a group of several diseases that have in common the uncontrolled proliferation of abnormal cells and that can occur anywhere in the body. The most frequent in childhood and adolescence are leukemias (which affect white blood cells) and those of the central nervous system and lymphomas (lymphatic system).

The campaign also aims to sensitize public authorities to the fact that in Brazil there is a lack of specialists in most cities, making it difficult to identify cancer, which is often confused with common childhood illnesses, such as worms and anemia.

We invite everyone to form a chain of good in favor of awareness of the symptoms of the disease and the importance of diagnosis. Let's dress Brazil in gold, inspiring a positive attitude with a view to a better quality of care in order to obtain higher cure rates with quality of life.
