The Água Marinha stone is one of the most representative gems in Brazil, as it has its largest deposits here. Derived from the mineral beryl which, in its original composition, is colorless, but has some variations known as precious stones: Emerald, which is green beryl; The Morganite, pink beryl; and Aquamarine, blue-green beryl.

Characteristics of Aquamarine stone

01 aquamarine

The composition of Água Marinha is based on iron which, in contact with light, generates a blue-green color, reminiscent of sea water and gave rise to the name of the gem, which comes from the Latin aquamarine. The natural color variations of Aquamarine range from sky blue to navy blue, but always maintaining the greenish tone; and the darker the blue, the more valuable the stone is considered.

The Mohs Scale assesses the hardness of elements and their resistance to scratching, ranging from 1 to 10, one being the most fragile to scratching and 10 being the most resistant, such as diamond. On this scale, Aquamarine has a hardness of 7,5 – 8, that is, it is very scratch resistant.

Like Diamond and Emerald, Aquamarine originates from the consolidation of magma, due to the great pressure that lava receives inside the earth, which causes it to solidify and turn into stones. These crystals, after cutting, become known as crystalline gems, one of the specialties of ArtOuro & Gems.

  4. My goddaughter's graduation ring is aquamarine. She told me that the ring fell to the ground and the stone broke. This is normal? Or did they just vote for a piece of glass in the ring?

    • Hi Wilma!
It's normal for this to happen! Gemstones are generally stronger than glass, but it can happen that they break if they are dropped.
